Overview
The Kelvin Grove Commercial Complex is a proposed two-storey mixed-use development comprising ground-floor retail tenancies with integrated parking and commercial office space above. The project was developed to provide a contemporary commercial destination that contributes to the evolving urban character of Kelvin Grove while supporting a flexible mix of retail and workplace uses. The proposal aligns with the mixed-use planning intent for the precinct, where retail and commercial uses are encouraged to activate the streetscape.
My Contribution
I joined the project during the latter stages of the Development Approval documentation phase, providing architectural support to progress the submission package.
My responsibilities focused on preparing and coordinating documentation updates while producing a series of high quality visualisations to communicate the design intent of the proposal. Using Lumion and Adobe Photoshop, I developed presentation renders that formed part of the Development Application material, helping illustrate the architectural character and relationship of the building within its surrounding context.
Key Takeaway
Although my involvement began later in the project, it provided valuable experience working within an established project team and contributing to a live Development Approval submission. Producing presentation imagery alongside documentation reinforced the importance of visual communication as a tool for supporting planning outcomes and helping clients and approval authorities understand the architectural intent. The sad reality of this project is that there were too many risks involved with construction, including the uncertainty in cost of materials, pushing the client to not proceed further.
